Guide Book to Explore Karimunjawa

Karimunjawa National Park, which forms a chain of 27 islands, represents several ecosystem types including lowland rain forest, seagrass and algae fields, coastal forests, mangrove forests, and coral reefs.
A characteristic plant of the Park is dewodaru (Crystocalyx macrophyla) which grows in lowland rain forest. The plants growing in the seagrass and algae fields can be classified into three divisions, namely Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. The coastal and mangrove forests are characterized by ketapang (Terminalia cattapa), cemara laut (Casuarina equisetifolia), jati pasir (Scaerota frustescens), setigi (Strebus asper), waru laut (Hibiscus tiliaceus), and mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata).Karimunjawa National Park's coral reefs are made up of fringing reefs, barrier reefs and several patch reefs. They have an incredible wealth of species: 51 genera with more than 90 species of coral biota and 242 species of ornamental fish. Two protected biota species, black coral (Antiphates sp.) and organ pipe coral (Tubipora musica), can be found here.
Other protected sea biota include the hornet helmet (Cassis cornuta), triton trumpet (Charonia tritonis), pearly-chambered nautili (Nautilus pompillius), green shell (Turbo marmoratus), and six species of clam.
The diversity of terrestrial animals of this Park is not as high in terms of numbers as that of the aquatic animals. However, it is still possible to see deer (Cervus timorensis subspec), pangolin (Manis javanica), 40 different bird species such as the green imperial pigeon (Ducula aenea), white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), yellow-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier), red-breasted parakeet (Psittacula alexandri), etc., as well as hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), common green turtle (Chelonia mydas), and edhor snake. The white-bellied sea eagle is listed as an endangered species.
Around Kemujan island, the wreck of the Panamanian ship "Indono", which sank to the sea bed in 1955, is now a habitat of coral fish and is a popular site for wreck diving.
Only five of the 27 islands are inhabited: Karimunjawa, Kemujan, Karang, Nyamuk and Genting. Karimunjawa Island is the centre of this sub-district, which is located 83 km from Jepara (a city famous in Indonesia for its woodcarving industry ).

Package Karimunjawa Backpacker

Package Karimunjawa Backpacker

This is the first of a new Active Backpacker segment I’m calling “Reader Tales”. These are stories from the readers who make up the world wide community of backpackers. Whether you’re travelling the globe or just exploring the beauty of your own country, everyone has a travel story to tell! This one comes from Juanda who lives in Indonesia, who tells us about a trip to the island of Karimun Jawa – which looks absolutely stunning. Read on!
I took a trip in November 2011 to Karimun Jawa with 7 friends of mine. It is located in Central Java Province of Indonesia. From Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, you can go there by plane to Semarang and continue by a speed boat for 2-3 hours to Karimun Jawa. Or, you can go by bus to Jepara which will be a 10-12 hours ride and continue by a slow big boat for another 5 hours. We took the latter. Why? Because we are cheap hahaha.
This is the route we took.

The road to Karimun Jawa.
Our journey was not a smooth one. First, we missed the boat. The boat departs at 8 am and it’s not daily. We missed the boat because we had a traffic jam going on from Jakarta to Jepara and the driver decided at that moment to take another route, which took an even longer time. Later on we found out that the other bus that stayed on the traffic jam got to Jepara faster than us!
This is the boat we were supposed to take.

The actual ferry (if we hadn’t missed it).
So after we arrived at the port, knowing that we missed the boat by one hour, we start looking for alternatives. And luckily there were fishermen who wanted to go to Karimun Jawa too. So we offer them some money to let us on their boat, and oh boy it was a journey we will never forget. 6 hours on the sea, sailing with a small boat and feeling the heat of the sun burning our skin!
This is the boat we actually ended up on…

The impromptu fishing boat!
But it was all worth it. Once we arrived there, only one word can describe how we felt for the 3 days we stayed there. Beautiful! Marvelous! Adventurous! Magical! Okay, that’s 4 words, and I might be exaggerating a little bit… Sue me!
Who knew swimming with a baby shark was so much fun!

Where’s the baby shark?

A Baby Shark!!!
Our activity was mainly hopping from one island to another, which meant sharing the boat with other people. So if you’re in luck, you will be on the same boat with the most annoying, self-centered, selfish, ego maniacal and ugliest people in the world. Just kidding. Indonesians are well known for their hospitality, and it’s true for the most part, especially if you’re a foreigner.
So, we’re on the same boat with one family who had a son. This kid was being really friendly so he ended up on a lot of our pictures. Like this one!

Look, that’s the kid!

He’s here too!

And here! (Tom note: Ahhh, that water looks AMAZING).
The journey home was also quite adventurous. This time we managed to get on board the big slow boat. But even though the boat was not going to depart until 8-9 AM, we had to be on the board pretty early in the morning if we wanted to get a nice seat.
So we woke up at 4 in the morning, packed our things and were already on the boat by 5:30 AM. We waited around 3 hours before the ship departed and we had to endure another 5 hours on the boat.
The nice thing about it was we saw a group of dolphins swimming on the open sea and we didn’t have to dig deep into our pockets for the privilege. For this trip we spent less than $100 per person and that includes everything from accomodation to the activities.
Now as a bonus. More pictures!

So is Indonesia now on my list of places to visit (it keeps getting longer and longer), you bet! Karimun Jawa looks awesome – and some of those water photos make me want to get out of Holland right now and avoid the looming winter. Thanks for the excellent post Juanda, and for showing us a glimpse of travel and life in Indonesia! A pack of Active Backpacker post cards are coming your way.

Menyawakan Island has much to offer to all sorts of divers, from novice to very experienced. The islands have been declared a national marine park and are protected. We have discovered several dive sites that are in good to excellent condition. We are placing mooring buoys on those locations, in corporation with the park authorities, and intend to protect them to the best of our ability. On the upside, one should perhaps mention the overall quality of the diving, the variety between fringing reefs, atolls and wrecks, the good variety of species, some of them rare, such as for example the Crocodile fish and Leafy Scorpion fish. Whale Sharks are being spotted all year round and recently one lucky group of divers had very close encounters with them on different locations on each of their three dives during one day... Macro divers also have a lot to be amazed of in the area and everyone loves the service given by the dive center!

    The Wreck of Mitra
An Indonesian Pinisi freighter, which where put up on the reef by the Captain, who tried to save the cargo. Unfortunately for him, it sank immediately. See it for yourselves. As one of our guest divers once said after an early dive there: "even Steven Spielberg could not have done it better!"

    The Wreck of Biblis
One of the the few wrecks in the world, which still has it huge bronze propeller intact. This wreck has been on the ocean floor for many years, so the coral life is amazing. Several big groupers are nearly always spotted on this wreck. Possibility to penetrate for trained wreck divers.
    Karang Kapal
Is a very big submerged reef, where we from time to time find new drop-off's. This reef is so big, that there is still much to be explored. This dive site is home to very big Bump head Parrotfish, and the occasional White tip reef shark.

    Taka Menyawakan
An exciting dive site, with spectacular coral cover which exceeds more than 250 different species, plentiful Bat fish and the wrecks of two ships! One of the wrecks is a Pelni ferry which sunk in the 50s. You will also see schooling Barracudas, Skipjack Tuna, Hawksbill turtles, Lobsters and Giant clams. Usually a strong current sweeps this reef, giving you an exciting ride all the way around it.

    Ezdir Reef
This dive site is named after one of our frequent diver guests. It was discovered mid/late 2000. The quality and variety of corals are extremely good, so good that one group of divers did three dives on this site in one day, and it was the first site they wanted to visit when they returned to the resort again.

    Hawksbill Point
Conveniently located on our own island of Menyawakan, this spot gives you the opportunity to come face to face with Hawksbill turtles and quite often Octopus too. Usually Crocodile fishes and Scorpion fishes are seen on your smooth drift back to the Resorts jetty

    Torpedo Reef
One of our most remote dive sites, but well worth the boat trip since it is one of the high lights of the archipelago. The exceptionally healthy Torpedo Reef has remnants of torpedoes and grenades scattered across the ocean floor. Beside the torpedoes and the grenades, the reef has a good variety of pelagics and the blooming soft corals are nothing less than fantastic!

    The Wreck of Indonur
Dutch steam ship. Went down in 1963. A huge warehouse was on fire on the beach, it was mistaken for the lights of Semarang, and the captain went full speed up on the reef..... Come and see 6cm thick steel plates, torn apart like paper. Large riveted steam boilers. Great fish and coral life on the wreck is growing bigger and bigger each year. Excellent night dives on this wreck when you will have a chance to see Arrow crabs, Soft coral crabs and numerous other macro critters.
